Jim Kilpatrick MBE releases the second of two statements today, addressing serious matters which he alleges contributed towards his removal from his position as leading drummer of the world champion Shotts & Dykehead Caledonia Pipe Band.
Reports of Jim Kilpatrick's "stand down" first appeared on the band's official website and thereafter on the pipes|drums website and the online and print versions of The Express.
Jim Kilpatrick's first statement contests that the Shotts band's Pipe Major, Ryan Canning, has placed disingenuous and ambiguous information in the public domain which led to misleading reporting, and false information about his future circulating in public and on global social media channels.
Earlier today, pipes|drums published a personal statement from Ryan Canning. This statement contains further misleading information that misrepresents Jim Kilpatrick's position and placed further false information in the public domain. A further article was published on The College of Piping website, in which Ryan Canning made another statement which differed from the pipes|drums statement.
In all, Ryan Canning has made a total of seven seperate statements to media outlets to date, six of which have changed the dynamic of the original press release published by the Shotts band on 12 October, 2015.
In today's second and final statement, Jim Kilpatrick reveals the alleged conduct of senior band members that played a significant part in his removal as leading drummer of the Shotts band, has led to further resignations from the Shotts band and has affected the band members and their families.
The statement is available to download and view now.
A series of online press releases, newspaper articles, blog articles and social media posts began circulating globally on Monday 12 October, 2015, regarding the removal of Jim Kilpatrick MBE as leading drummer of Shotts & Dykehead Caledonia Pipe Band.
Shotts & Dykehead Caledonia Pipe Band published a press release on that date titled "Jim Kilpatrick Steps Down; Blair Brown Takes Over".
pipes|drums picked up the story and initially reported it under the headline "Kilpatrick retires from Shotts; Brown new L-D", which created immediate doubt over the future career of Jim Kilpatrick. The headline was changed a short time later to read "Jim Kilpatrick steps down from Shotts; Blair Brown new L-D". The article reported Jim Kilpatrick had stood down from his position as leading drummer of the Shotts band.
Neither the band's press release or the pipes|drums article included comment from Jim Kilpatrick.
Jim Kilpatrick provided pipes|drums with a statement on Saturday 17 October, 2015. The website subsequently published a story "More to Shotts L-D change story as Kilpatrick releases statement", which contained further information from the band, as well as Jim Kilpatrick's statement.
On Monday 19 October, 2015, The Express newspaper published a print story "Wrong note for top pipe band in drummer row" and a Web story "Row as top drummer leaves world champion pipe band". Portions of Jim Kilpatrick's statement were quoted in both articles, although Jim Kilpatrick was not interviewed by the newspaper. Fresh information was presented by Ryan Canning to which Jim Kilpatrick was not invited to comment.
On Thursday 22 October, 2015, The College of Piping website editor published a blog article "Jim Kilpatrick Departure - A statement from Shotts Pipe Major, Ryan Canning". The statement presented fresh information regarding Jim Kilpatrick's removal from the Shotts band. This article was deleted from The College of Piping website only minutes after being posted.
On Friday 23 October, 2015, a five page statement from Ryan Canning appeared on pipes|drums titled "Shotts-Kilpatrick story continues: band offers an apology".
Shortly afterwards, The College of Piping published an article titled "Ryan Canning Statement" with a footnote from the editor "Yesterday, the College website contained a statement from Ryan Canning regarding the recent departure of Jim Kilpatrick from Shotts & Dykehead Caledonia Pipe Band. We removed the item shortly after it appeared and we wish to make it clear that the statement was an excerpt from a wider report into the story which appears in the next issue of the Piping Times. We apologise to readers for any confusion caused, and to Ryan." Jim Kilpatrick was not invited to comment on the website article and has not been contacted about any forthcoming report to appear in the Piping Times.
Jim Kilpatrick said "The original story in the band’s press release appears to take on a new dimension every time Ryan Canning speaks to the media. My position will remain unchanged; it is supported by evidence; namely band members and other interested parties who have come forward, documentary evidence in Ryan Canning’s own words and the e-mail letter of resignation submitted to the band after Blair Brown’s appointment was announced. The facts do not misrepresent the truth."

Five well known pipers and drummers will get their kicks from Chicago to Los Angeles along the legendary Route 66 this spring taking their teaching and playing talents across the heartland of America in April, 2012.
Dubbed 'Pipes & Sticks on Route 66', bass drummer Mike Cole, snare-drummer Jim Kilpatrick, and pipers Stuart Liddell, Angus MacColl and Willie McCallum will start in Chicago on April 2nd, with the first scheduled concert on April 7th at the Irish American Heritage Center Auditorium in Chicago.
"The idea hatched last May with a conversation Stuart [Liddell] and I had on a flight to the U.S." McCallum said. "We thought the trip sounded fantastic and we had both always wanted to do it. Doing it combined with the pipes sounded very logical. It then grew a bit when we considered how we could do some concerts, workshops with pipes and drums combined. We sat on it for a few weeks whilst we thought of the best way ahead.
"It was then a case of who we thought would be interested in coming along as a team of five.
Those we approached first agreed with no hesitation and we think it's an amazingly talented line-up."
Among the group is just about every important solo piping and drumming award, many of which have been won several times over. McCallum said that additional events will be announced as they are determined.
"We will stick as far as possible to the original Route 66, but there will be a few diversions along the way" McCallum added, and said that the group will travel in a small bus, and will stay in motels en- route.
A documentary film is also being planned, with Spirit of Scotland Pipe Band 'On The Day' movie director John McDonald recording the adventure.
Before the United States developed the current Interstate system, Route 66 was the primary highway connecting the western half of the country, starting in Chicago and traversing St. Louis, Tulsa, Santa Fe, Flagstaff and ending in Los Angeles. Route 66 was made more famous referenced in several songs in the 1950s and '60s.
You can find the dates of the tour on Jim's master classes schedule.
